Ah time, the thing we all feel like we simply do not have enough of. I am sure we have all felt like there just isn’t enough hours in the day, but time is one of the few constants we know in life so we have to learn to work with what we’ve got.
As a designer time management is key to avoiding long sleepless nights, coffee addictions and broken client relationships. That’s what I’ve learned at least, as I try to work through my independent project for Mishka Social Services. I am quite simply at a crossroads right now, where assignments and other responsibilities are all unravelling and coming to their final deadlines together. And it can be quite overwhelming at times.
But I would be lying if I said that I hadn’t seen this coming, because I did. Back in January/February, things felt rather calm and deadlines were relatively easy to meet. However, there were plenty of things that I could have been more proactive about back then so that I wouldn’t be as exhausted and stressed as I am now. I remember even telling myself and those around me this.
I can’t turn back time so all I can do is move forward hoping that I have learned my lesson and work on figuring out how I can take advantage of the time I do have. Which is definitely harder than it sounds considering that as a creative, even if you do “take advantage of your time” you still have to understand that ideas themselves need time to develop into something with potential. So really I think designers and creatives are doubly pressured by time because we are expected to always be able to deliver, regardless ofwhether or not we feel inspired at that particular moment of our lives.
And I truly wish that I had a solution or methodology for learning to manage my time but right now I don’t and really all I have is that it takes dedication, hard work and being proactive to succeed in this field.
